Threading Tool Sharpener
Threading tools need to be sharp so that the cuts it creates are precise and even all the way through the material it is cutting into. You can disassemble your lathe and sharpen your tool bit by bit, but that can be extremely time consuming. Instead, using a threading tool sharpener will ensure that the form you use to cut threads stays sharp and ready to use.
Multi-Tooth Inserts
When using a threading tool, it can be very time consuming as you work down your wood or metal with the threading form. The whole process can be made quicker with multi-tooth inserts. These are forms that contain multiple, identical sharp edges so that the wood or metal can be cut into in bigger sections at a time. The cuts for the threading will still be even, but will be done in far less time.
What to Look for
When you are looking for a thread cutting tool, there are several things you should look for. Look at the tool and make sure that it is sharp and shaped to cut a thread. The edge should also be at an angle so that it can cut into the metal or wood properly.
Partial Inserts and Full Inserts
Threading tools can be partial or full. The partial does not top at the thread. It can create threads down close to the bottom or almost all the way at the top, but will not reach all the way to either end. The area where the form is set is made just big enough that any insert can be added. A full insert makes stronger threads and could be completed in four passes of the lathe.
