How to Clean Old Pictures

Though photographs are merely printed pieces of paper, their sentimental cannot be measured. If your photos become dusty or dirty, you can clean them yourself by following a few simple steps. By keeping your photos clean and properly stored, you'll help them last for generations to come.

Things You'll Need

  • Towel
  • Cotton photo-editing gloves
  • Canned air
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Photographic emulsion cleaner

Instructions

      Place your unfolded towel on a flat, dry surface.

      Put on the cotton gloves, and place your photo in the center of the towel.

      Test the canned air. Spray it away from the photo to make sure the air sprays cleanly without expelling any moisture.

      Spray the canned air carefully over the photo. Hold the nozzle at least 2 to 3 inches away from the picture. You can also use a soft-bristled brush to dust off unwanted debris.

      Use a photographic emulsion cleaner if unwanted residue or dirt remains on your photo. Follow the directions for your emulsion cleaner carefully to avoid damaging your photo.
