How to Sync a Flash With a Nikon D80

Nikon's Creative Lighting System takes the guesswork out of studio lighting, a formerly complicated technology. Even Nikon's amateur cameras, such as the D80, can be synchronized with remote flash units to create unique lighting with minimal fuss. Once synchronized, the D80's shutter release will also trigger the remote flash.

Things You'll Need

Nikon D80
Nikon SB-600, SB-800 or other synchronizable Nikon flash unit

Instructions

  Verify that both camera and flash have fresh batteries. The Creative Lighting System uses a lot of battery power and doesn't function properly when the strobe or camera batteries are drained.

  Set the D80 to commander mode. Press the "MENU" button and scroll down to the pencil icon and select the "CUSTOM SETTING MENU."

  Scroll to option 22, "Built In Flash," and select "Commander Mode." Press "OK" to set the D80 as the control for the remote flash.

  Set the remote flash unit to "Slave Mode." Press "ZOOM" and "-" simultaneously to bring up the CSM camera menu.

  Select the option that looks like a lightning bolt combined with an arrow and press "OK" to turn on remote power. Press the power button once to escape from the menus. The flash will now be synced with the D80 and can be used remotely.
