How to Use the Focus Brackets in the Nikon D40

Even the best digital camera produces mediocre photos if the camera's focus is off. Nikon's D40 offers multiple focusing modes that allow the photographer to choose how the camera is focused on a particular subject. Using and changing these focus controls starts with the custom settings menu, where the focus area can be changed.

Instructions

    • 1

Select your focusing mode. Press the "Menu" button on the back of the camera body, then select the custom setting menu. Select the second option, "Focus Mode," to open the mode selection.

    • 2

Select "AF Area Mode" to activate the focusing brackets. This provides three focusing options--closest subject, dynamic area or single area. Select the mode that suits your photo composition and exit the menu.

    • 3

Align the focusing brackets with the subject of the photograph and press the shutter button halfway. This focuses the lens on the subject. Press the "AF-L" button to lock the focus or press the shutter button fully to take the picture.
