Set up the D300 by inserting a fresh battery. The D300's upgraded battery gets about 1,000 shutter actuations per charge, an upgrade on the 300 or so provided by its predecessor, the D200. The Nikon D300's enhanced features work best with a freshly charged battery.
Select a Nikon F-mount lens. The D300 body uses Nikon's standard bayonet-style F-mount lens system, allowing you to use nearly any Nikon lens. If you are using an older or manual lens, enter the focal length and aperture of the lens by pressing and holding the "Function" button located on the front of the camera body, then using the rear dials to enter the data. This feature allows the D300 to apply metering to lenses that would ordinarily not function with a new camera body.
Turn on the new Adaptive Dynamic Range feature. Press the "Menu" button, then scroll to the "Shooting Menu" option. Select the "Active D Lighting" option and turn this feature on. This new feature introduces richer color and increases the dynamic range of the sensor, allowing the D300 to preserve flashier highlights and richer shadows.
Set your ISO by pressing and holding the ISO button on the back of the camera, then rotating the top rear dial to select the speed. The Nikon D300's more advanced sensor allows higher ISOs to be selected without adding in artifacts or sacrificing sharpness, unlike previous models. This camera can be set up to 6400 ISO.
