Open your scanned photograph in your photo-editing software, and use the straightening tool to situate the picture where you might have scanned it in slightly crooked. If the photo was taken at a crooked angle, you can straighten it now, and crop the edges to clean it up.
Remove the dust from the photo by using the tools for removing noise. Obvious blotches on the picture can be cleaned up by using the clone tool. Use this tool to copy a clean part of the photo similar to the damaged part and replace the flaws, one small section at a time. Make sure you have expanded the picture by at least 200 percent when you are editing it.
Adjust the clarity of the picture by using the brightness and contrast tools. Make small changes, and check the effect on the photo by zooming out each time. This procedure will often make the objects clearer in the photo either by reducing extra brightness or by adding light to a dark picture.
Try sharpening the photo by using the sharpening filter. Use this sparingly, as too much use of it will make the picture look like it has been touched up.
Add a border around the picture to match the original, if you want it. One of the characteristics of older photos is the white 1/4-inch border and their size of 3.25 by 4.25 inches. Of course, you can enlarge the pictures to look more modern by sizing them to be 4 by 6 inches.
Save the pictures to your computer and then have them printed on a professional printing machine. You can upload pictures online for mail order, or you can transfer them to a memory card and bring it to a local printer. Some home printers will produce excellent copies with the right ink and paper.
