Photo Montage Programs

Photo montages are illustrations or photos, created by cutting and joining a number of images to create one unique work of art. Photography and its digital programs have taken the creative process out of a wet darkroom and moved it to a digital darkroom. Whether you are a photographer, illustrator or visual artist, if you are comfortable using these programs, you can create as many different montages as you can imagine.
  1. Artensoft Photo Mosaic Wizard

    • This program allows you to compose montages out of ordinary photos. According to the Photo Mosaic website, the program "does complex math to fit cell images so that they form the most realistic mosaic without any color overlays." Using the program you can make posters, wallpaper, photo collages, mosaics and montages.

    Image Elements Photo Montage

    • Using this program "you can create a montage style from a single picture;" the program lets you use various layered styles to create your montage, according to the software&'s website. The best way to understand layers and what they do is to think of a layer as a sheet of paper with a design or effect on it that you lay onto the original image. Each layer adds to the montage&'s final result. The software is designed to be a stand-along program not requiring additional software for it to run.

    AKVIS Chameleon

    • This program has four working modes. The Montage mode "combines images to create seamless photo montages," says the company website, and is recommended for use in creating montages that contain people. The Chameleon Mode will adjust "inserted objects to the target image color range and smooths the inserted objects borders," says the website. The Blend Mode will "not only smooth the borders of the inserted object it also makes the object semi-transparent" to allow the underlying image to still be visible. The Emersion Mode will "paste fragments into the background so only certain parts of the fragment are visible." The program is designed to be a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo and Photo Impact. In addition to learning this program, photographers and illustrators should have an understanding of the underlying programs as well. The software costs $75 and can be downloaded from the Internet.
