Instructions

    • 1

Set up a shop light as your main light source. You&'ll need to spread the light to soften it, so hang a length of your muslin fabric or a white sheet in front of it. Be sure the fabric doesn&'t touch the light itself because these are continuous burning lights that run hot.

    • 2

Use the clip on light with its own reflector as a fill light. This lights helps eliminate shadows, and the reflector will allow for more directional lighting.

    • 3

Separate your subject from the backdrop using the small clip-on desk light. This is known as a hair light and can be pointed directly toward the hair using a snoot. Make your own snoot by fashioning a cone shape from aluminum foil. Attach the wide end to the lamp and direct the light toward the hair.

Use an accordion car shade or a white poster board to reflect a soft light back onto your subject. Reflectors are used to create lights in a subject&'s eyes and to add subtle light. They are placed in opposition to the light source and "bounced" back onto the subject.
