How to Start Up a Stock Photo Website

Digital photography has led to an explosion of stock and micro-stock photographic sites. There are also options for individual photographers who have an archive of work they want to market to create their own personal stock photo site. In setting up your own personal stock site you have control over who you market your photos to, and your terms and prices of sale.

Open a stock photo account. There many free and pay sites available. When you are looking for a site you want to be able to create galleries and be able to offer an e-commerce solution—where clients can order and pay for your images at the same time—for your clients. Photoshelter is a web-based archive used by many photographers both amateur and professional to house and market their photos. While there is a free account available, you can also upgrade to a pay account, which will increase the amount of storage you have available to you. Photobucket and PhotoStockPlus also give photographers a wide range of website templates, galleries, printing and e-commerce solutions, all of which are important elements of any stock photo site.

Prepare your images for uploading. The number-one difference between a stock photo site and an online gallery is making your images searchable. You may have some of the most stunning images ever created, but if potential buyers are unable to locate them on the Internet your chances of selling them are pretty low. Use keywords—descriptive words or phrases—to make your photos easier to find. You can add keywords to your pictures through most photo browsers on your computer, and with the Photoshelter account you can add them after uploading to your account.

Upload your pictures. Create galleries for your photos. Naming your galleries is another important step in making your pictures searchable. SEO—search engine optimization—means you want to use descriptive generic words for your gallery. For example, if you have a gallery of landscape photos you could call your gallery “Landscapes” or you could title it “Landscape photography from in and around Southern Ontario Canada, shot by your name,” which gives more detailed information about your images. Repeat this process until all of your photos have been uploaded to your stock photo site, and then you can start marketing to editors, galleries and advertising agencies.
