Ideas for Photo Albums

As much as you want to show your vacation pictures to your friends, a boring photo album will put them right to sleep. Improve your photo album by picking the right pictures. If the album material, pages and captions are interesting, friends and family will love to look over your creation.
  1. Photo Themes

    • Decide what kind of photos will fill your album. Albums are often more enjoyable to look at when they have a unifying theme. Fill one album with pictures of your Caribbean vacation and another with your oldest daughter&'s college graduation. Knowing the album&'s theme will help you choose the material and page design. Place the pictures in the album in a logical order. If you can&'t think of an interesting order, place them chronologically.

    Album Material

    • The outside of your photo album is just as important as the pictures inside. Choose a binding and material that matches the theme. Pick a plain cloth or paper album material and draw designs on the cover to personalize it. Paste pictures and images to give a hint of what can be found inside. For a sleek and professional look, pick a plain leather or faux-leather material. This is perfect for photo albums with a serious or professional subject, such as a photo presentation for work.

    Album Pages

    • Choose album pages based on how many pictures you want per page. Some albums can hold two pictures per page, while others hold three or four. Consider if you want to add captions or scrapbooking elements. Traditional photo albums have enough page room to hold only the pictures. This works well for a photo album with a minimalistic style, but not so much if you want to add an artistic flair. Also consider the colors of the album pages as they relate to the overall theme of the photo album. Light pink works well for an album of a baby girl.

    Captions

    • Captions make an interesting and often funny addition to a photo album. If you have album pages that allow space for captions, plan out how to write them before you start. You could describe exactly what or who is in the picture, such as "Kim and Valerie at the Reception," or get a bit more creative by describing what&'s happening in a funny way, such as "Kim tries in vain to teach Valerie how to dance." These types of captions make looking at the photo album much more interesting for guests. Even better, create captions that act as quotes for what may be said in the scene the photograph captures. A picture of a brother holding his newborn sister may read, "How long do I have to hold her? My arms are tired."
