DIY Photo Backdrop Stand

Studio backdrops are an integral part of a photographer&'s tools that he or she uses to create stunning studio images. If you are just starting out as a photographer and have decided to open your own studio, chances are you will want to have back drops. To hang those backdrops, you need a stand. Backdrop stands are not cheap, but with a little bit of work, you can make your own backdrop stand that will work just as well as any store-bought stand.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one length of 18-inch 1-inch PVC piping into each opening in two of the “T” joints. This will create the base of the stand. The third opening should be pointed towards the ceiling. Install a cap on the ends of the PVC pipes.

    • 2

Connect two “L” joints to one of the 8-foot lengths of pipe to build the cross-bar for the stand. Insert the remaining 8-foot pieces of PVC piping into the “L” joints and into the third opening of the “T” joint in the stand&'s base. Your base is now ready to be used.

    • 3

Attach the backdrop of your choice. You can do this a couple of ways. One is to sew a loop into the backdrop and slide the cross-bar into that loop. The other way is to use clamps or even heavy tape to hold the backdrop in place. If you sew a loop into the backdrop, do not glue it in the cross-bar. Detach the cross-bar at one end, slide the backdrop onto the bar, reattach to the stand and it is ready to be used.
