How to Make Photo Mugs at Home

Make a photo mug at home without sending photos to a printer and waiting weeks for the finished mug to return in the mail. Photo-insert mugs allow one to print a photo or use an existing photo, trim it to size, and insert it directly into the photo space provided, usually between a clear plastic outer mug and a dark colored inner insert. The two snap or screw together to trap the photo in between the two water-tight pieces, so the photo is protected from being damaged by any liquid used in the mug.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo-insert mug

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew or unsnap the inner and outer pieces of the photo-insert mug and remove the stock photo insert sold with the mug. The screw-together and the snap-together versions of the photo-insert mug work equally well since only the inside plastic piece that holds the liquid is actually washed. Look at the size of the stock insert, since this is the size photo you will need.

    • 2

Choose a photo the same size as the mug's photo insert template or print the photo, if necessary, on generic matte photo paper on a printer capable of printing realistic photos.

    • 3

Lay the stock photo template on top of the printed photo you want to insert and center it so that the photo displays properly. Then mark the edges of the template on the photo with a crayon or grease pencil.

    • 4

Trim the photo to the size of the template with scissors or a paper cutter.

    • 5

Insert the trimmed photo into the mug so that the photo shows through the clear plastic outer portion of the mug, then place the plastic mug insert into the mug, so that the photo is smoothly trapped between the clear plastic on the outside and the solid colored plastic insert on the inside.

    • 6

Snap or screw the two parts of the mug together to secure the mug and form a liquid-proof seal to protect the photo.
