Photography Party
Throw a party for a group of friends who might be interested in your work. It has worked for hundreds of other businesses but may be a fairly new way to promote a photography business. Find a friend who can host the event, and be sure she has room to accommodate your guests and a small makeshift studio. You'll want a current sampling of your best work. Invite friends and acquaintances, and encourage them to RSVP so you'll be able to tell your host how many guests to expect. Ask each guest to bring hairstyling accessories and makeup. They may also want to bring a change of clothes to be photographed in. Ask your hostess to be available to help guests prepare for their portraits by checking hair and makeup. Invite each guest to pose for a picture, and provide each with a free 8-by-10 and ordering information. Include package prices, available sizes and services you provide. Reward your hostess by offering a free family portrait. While you have the opportunity, ask your guests if they would be willing to host a party, and offer them a good incentive. This is a great way to familiarize people with your work and a fun social event as well.
Network
Join your local chamber of commerce. You'll find other business professionals who need head shots, and many will have a family and want regular portraits taken. Attend the network meetings to get the most of your membership, and get your card into as many hands as possible. If you can afford the expense, have brochures printed that represent your best work.
Use the web to network and establish a website. Almost all viable businesses have a web presence. Use the popular network sites like MySpace and Facebook to get your work in front of millions.
Display Your Work
Your local mall or shopping center might allow you to rent wall space on which you can exhibit your best work. Be sure to have business cards and brochures near the display and to replenish them often. Keep your display fresh by adding your most current work. Ask fellow business owners if you can display your work in their establishments. Be sure to ask clients how they heard of your services so you know which promotional activity is working well for you.
