The Specifications for a Nikon N90s

The Nikon N90 was produced from 1992 to 2001. There were two models of this versatile film camera, the N90 and the N90s. The N90s is the later release of the N90 body and featured significant improvements and finer controls for professionals.
  1. History

    • The N90 was produced for nearly a decade. There were two incarnations of this professional grade camera body. The N90 was the original release and was also known as the F90. This camera body replaced the Nikon F801 (N8008) with a better and more advanced auto focus system. Later, the N90 was revised to the N90s (F90x in North America), which allowed for shutter speed adjustments of a third of a stop and a better auto focus system.

    Lenses

    • The N90s camera body has a bayonet-style F-mount lens system, allowing it to accept most Nikon lenses. This camera shoots well with Nikon's AF series of lenses, including AF-I, AF-D and AF-S. Modern DX lenses are developed for smaller digital camera sensors and produce severe vignetting when used with the N90s. AI and AIs lenses also work with this camera when used in fully manual mode, and G lenses work well in Program and Shutter Priority modes.

    Modes

    • The camera's shooting modes are changed by pressing the MODE button on the top of the camera. Nikon's N90s has a number of shooting modes, ranging from fully manual to automatic, including two types of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and fully manual. These modes increase the shooting versatility of the N90s and are similar to the modes on a modern digital SLR camera. One of the features of the N90s included the ability to adjust shutter speed in increments of 1/3 of a stop, allowing finer control over exposure.

    Auto Focus

    • The N90s made big improvements in the area of auto focus. Several auto focus modes are available using the single sensor system. The auto focus could be used in a focus and lock mode called single-servo. There is also a continuous focus mode, where focus adjusts based on the image composition.

    Drawbacks

    • The N90s is an older camera with a rubber backing. In some instances, this backing peels away from the camera body. One of the other drawbacks is the noise of the auto focus motor. This can be corrected by using a modern AF-S lens on the body, making it nearly silent. The N90s also has no built-in flash, but uses a standard hot shoe mounted flash for lighting.
