How to Set a Rear Flash on a Canon 5D

The Canon 5D camera body offers a number of flash sync modes with a sync speed of up to 1/200th of a second, making this one of the fastest camera bodies available. This model does not have a dedicated pop-up flash; a secondary, hot-shoe flash must be mounted on the unit in order to use a flash. Rear curtain flash can be set so that the flash fires as the shutter curtain is closing, capturing motion that occurs at the end of the exposure.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the Canon 5D into "Program" mode, using the dial on the top of the camera body.

    • 2

Press the menu button. The rear curtain sync is a custom function and can be accessed on the camera body through the menu screens. Scroll down and select the option for "Custom Functions," then press "OK".

    • 3

Scroll to custom function No. 15 and press the "Select" button. Change this setting from "0" to "1" to enable the rear curtain flash.

    • 4

Connect a flash unit to the hot shoe mount on the 5D camera body. When fired, the unit's flash will synchronize with the shutter's closing.
