Crafts with Paper Towel Cardboard Tubes

Cardboard tubes that paper towels are rolled on are versatile and inexpensively and easily obtained. Some of the many crafts that kids can make quickly with the cardboard tubes are a totem pole, a microphone, a sword and a rhythm shaker. All of the crafts can be made by substituting a toilet tissue tube or any other type of cardboard tube. The finished craft will be larger or smaller than one made with a paper towel tube, depending on what type and size of cardboard tube is used.
  1. Totem Poles

    • You need one cardboard tube; several pieces of construction paper in various colors, including either black or brown; pencil; scissors; one small paper plate; and glue. Cut a rectangular shape from either the black or brown construction paper large enough to cover the entire tube. Glue in place around the tube. Using the pencil, draw shapes of items you would like to include on your totem pole, like different types of birds, animals, flowers and plants. Cut around the shapes and glue them onto the tube. Turn the paper plate upside down for a base. Apply a layer of glue to the bottom rim of the tube and secure it to the center of the plate. Allow the glue to dry.

    Microphone

    • You need one cardboard tube; one ping pong ball; and glue. Glue the ping pong ball into one end of the tube. Allow the glue to dry. That̵7;s it! You can paint the cardboard tube or cover it with colored paper, if you like.

    Noise Shaker

    • You need one cardboard tube; construction paper; scissors; two rubber bands; and some filler such as dried rice. Cut two circles of construction paper each big enough to fit over the end of the cardboard tube with about 1 inch extra all the way around. Secure one of the paper circles to one end of the tube with a rubber band. Pour about a half cup of the rice into the tube. Glue the other paper circle onto the other end of the tube. Now, shake the tube to hear the rice rattle. You can fill the tube with any type of small, hard material like marbles, stones or beads. If you like, you can paint the outside of the tube or cover it with colored paper. (Do this before filling the tube.)
