How to Change the Background Color in Photography

Changing the background color for a digital photograph is a fairly simple process if you have Adobe Photoshop. Other graphics programs have the same ability, but the steps to complete the color change may vary. Changing the background of a photograph can give very pleasing results, particularly if you are eliminating a cluttered background.

      Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.

      Select the "Magnetic Lasso" from the left hand tool bar.

      Outline the edges of your subject using the magnetic lass. Try to stay as close to your subject as you can.

      Choose "Select" and "Inverse" to invert your subject. This unselects the subject and selects the background of your image.

      Open your new background image in a new window.

      Press "Control + A" while on the new background image to select the whole thing.

      Right click on the selected background and choose "Copy" to send the image to the clipboard.

      Click on your original image and select "Edit" and "Paste" to replace the background of the image.

      Select the "Move" tool from the left hand tool bar if you need to adjust the placement of the background image.

      Save the picture as a .jpeg by selecting "File" and "Save As."
