How to Use a Cloud Dome for Photo Jewelry

Taking pictures of your jewelry can be very simple and effective when using a Cloud Dome. The Cloud Dome is a lightweight, portable system that consists of a large, white plastic dome that includes a clamp for your digital camera. You place the Cloud Dome over your jewelry when photographing, and the dome evenly diffuses the light, resulting in high quality photos of your jewelry. You will use your own digital camera with the Cloud Dome, so knowledge of digital camera operation is required.

Instructions

  1. Cloud Dome

    • 1

Attach the bracket to the top of the Cloud Dome according to the instructions in the manual. The bracket will hold your digital camera.

    • 2

Attach your digital camera to the bracket.

    • 3

Choose a background for your picture. This can be a white piece of paper or black piece of paper. Fabrics like velvet also work well as a jewelry background. Keep your background simple, however. Your goal is to highlight your jewelry, and patterns on your background piece can compete with and distract from your jewelry.

    • 4

Place your piece of jewelry on your chosen background, and attractively arrange the piece of jewelry. Keep in mind that you will be taking the picture from above, looking down at your jewelry.

    • 5

Place the dome on top of your jewelry. When placing the dome over your jewelry, make certain that your jewelry is in the center of the dome.

    Camera

    • 6

Set the white balance on your camera, then set the camera to Auto.

    • 7

      Turn the flash off.

    • 8

Set your camera to the highest resolution possible. (Setting your camera to a higher resolution will give you a better quality picture.)

    • 9

Set your camera to Macro mode.

    • 10

Take your picture. You may choose to use the timer on your camera if you have one.

    • 11

Evaluate your picture: check the results of your background choice, the angle of your shot and the lighting. Make adjustments if needed. If additional light is required, use a natural light like an Ottlite or a natural daylight bulb in a lamp. Move the light around the dome to determine the best placement.
