Instructions
Place the oldest member of members of the family in the center of the shot, seated on a chair or stool. If present, the grandparents tend to be the best center point.
Arrange the next generation of family members behind the eldest members. Place the tallest in the center, and then alternate to the left and right sides for the next tallest individuals. Ensure that each person's shoulders are overlapping with the person's next to them.
Put spouses of the second generation in the middle row, aligned with the oldest generation. Spouses should be in front of the member to whom they are married. If there are no spouses, the second generation should curve in on the edges so that the furthest individuals to the left and right (and thus the shortest individuals) are aligned with the oldest generation.
Place the next generation (or the youngest members of the family) in the front row, seated on the floor in front of the eldest generation. These members should be positioned to cover the legs of the elders.
Insert any very small children into the image by placing them on the grandparents' laps. If small infants are uncooperative in this position, they can also be lain in the front row, or paired with their parents in the back row.
