How to Send Pictures Via Airmail

Even when we live in a digital age where people send pictures through email daily, some still send photographs through the postal service airmail. Not everyone has access to a computer or the technical experience to open digital pictures. Additionally, there may be pictures that are too large or too old to even scan and send through the net. Sending pictures through airmail still holds much merit today and the United States Postal Service can provide this service for you.

Instructions

Select the shape of the mailing container according to the size of your pictures. There are several types to choose from: letter size, large envelopes, packages and tubes. All these mailing types have maximum dimension requirements that the USPS will allow. If you are uncertain whether your own set of envelopes, packages or tubes meet their criteria, the USPS sells mailing containers at their local post office branches that are within their size standards. Additionally, they sell bubble-lined, padded paper and waterproof envelopes for extra protection for your photos.

Address your mail properly. Write in the recipient's name and address on the center of your mail, while writing your name and return address on the upper left. Affix the appropriate stamps on the upper right corner if you wish, otherwise the postal service agent will calculate and stick a postage sticker on your mail at time of check out. If you are using a package or tube, write all this information on blank stickers and stick them parallel to the length of your mail.

Choose a USPS mailing service. The services offered are dependent on how quickly you want your pictures sent as well as the price you're willing to pay. You can select from Express, Priority, First-Class, Parcel Post or Media Mail. Keep in mind that for First-Class mail you can only send a maximum package weight of 3.5 oz. or less for letter size envelopes and 13.5 oz. for large envelopes and packages and you cannot send tubes.

Add additional services for your mail. This can be provided when you process your package at the post office. These services include Certificate of Mailing, Certified Mail, Insured Mail, Registered Mail, as well as Delivery and Signature Confirmation. Prices will vary for these services, so consult with the USPS agent for details.
