How to Repair a Nikon DSLR Lens

Nikon begin as a lens manufacturer, so it's not surprising that its lenses are top quality. Digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera lenses can have an array of computerized functions, such as vibration reduction, in addition to their conventional functions. Truly problematic DSLR lenses are best left to professional camera repair shops, but there are a few simple steps which you can take at home to determine if your Nikon DSLR lens is in need of an expensive fix.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure the lens is on the proper setting for the camera body. Lenses with adjustable apertures must be set to specific settings in order to work with a DSLR. This setting is different between Nikon camera bodies, so check your owner's manual. Lenses that are older may not have compatible computer elements, so features such as autofocus and metering may be impaired when using old lenses on a new DSLR.

    • 2

Reset the camera. Make sure all images are saved, then remove the battery from the camera. Wait 30 seconds, then replace the battery and turn the camera back on. Press and hold the two buttons marked with a green dot to reset the camera to factory settings. This will reset metering settings and the lens focusing grid. You will have to reset any custom settings you were using before continuing to shoot.

    • 3

Remove the lens from the camera body. If the focusing ring is stuck, do not force the lens to move or you could cause damage to both the camera and the lens. Once the lens is removed, place a protective cap over the camera body's lens mount.

    • 4

Inspect the lens for any dirt, debris or dust which could interrupt the function of the lens. Clean the lens with a dust-free cloth, taking care not to press any debris into the lens glass.

    • 5

Look for dirt and grit being trapped in the moving elements of the lens, such as the focusing ring. If these parts are frozen, apply a drop of gun oil at each interval one-quarter of the way around the lens. Turn the part gently to work in the gun oil. Do not apply too much, or this can cause your lens to become too loose.

Send the lens to an authorized repair service if cleaning and resetting the lens does not produce satisfactory results. Nikon DSLR lenses contain sensitive electronic elements and require an experienced repair facility for all but the most basic repairs.
