How to Make a Solar Oven That Can Fry an Egg

Using a solar oven can save you money on your utility bill, and they're also easy to use. You don̵7;t need to stir or look after your food once you put it into the oven. Just prepare your food, put it into the oven on a sunny day and wait a few hours for it to cook. Solar ovens can be purchased at camping stores, or you can make your own inexpensive oven from recycled materials and other household items.

  • Ruler
  • Utility knife
  • Craft glue
  • Aluminum foil
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Line the ruler up with the edge of the top of the pizza box and run a pencil along the inner edge. Do this for all four edges of the top of the box until you have drawn a square.

    • 2

Cut along three sides of the pencil-drawn square with a utility knife. Don̵7;t cut the back edge where the box top attaches to the bottom of the box.

    • 3

Bend the inner square upward and evenly apply glue to the underside. Attach aluminum foil, shiny side out, to the glued cardboard. Smooth out any wrinkles. Cut away excess foil with scissors.

    • 4

Spray the inside bottom and sides of the bottom of the box with black spray paint. Allow to dry.

    • 5

Measure and cut a piece of stiff, clear plastic slightly larger than the square hole you cut out of the box top. Tape it to the inside of the box top, covering the square hole. Do not tape it to the foil part of the box.

    • 6

Put a cast iron skillet inside the box bottom and lower the plastic-covered lid. Attach two drinking straws together end to end and tape it to the side of the box bottom. Use it to prop up the foil reflector piece.

    • 7

Wait a few hours on a sunny day and remove the skillet with a pot holder. Add butter or oil and crack an egg in the pan to fry.
