How to Measure Glass for Hollow Metal Frames

Putting your pictures on display allows all your guests to view the memories that you hold dear. Almost every frame will come with a glass (or sometimes plastic) piece that sits on top of the picture. This helps preserve the picture from dust, air or anything else that can damage the picture. If the glass piece should crack or break, it needs to be replaced. Instead of going out and purchasing a brand new frame, simply measure how big the glass should be and purchase just the glass.

  Remove any pictures or glass fragments from the frame to leave just the hollow frame.

  Place the fabric measuring tape on the inside of the frame. Fabric tape is thin, flexible and will be easier to measure the inside of the frame.

  Hold the tape inside the frame with your non-dominant hand at the bottom of the width-side of the frame.

  Pull the tape up with your other hand to the top of the width-side of the frame. Always remember that you are measuring the inside of the frame where the glass will go.

  Record the inches of the width-side.

  Repeat the process for the length-side of the frame. Record the number in inches.

  Take the measurements to a frame shop where they can cut the exact piece of glass that you will need for your frame.
