How to Enlarge Photography Prints

Creating an enlargement is simple when you own the negative or have a copy of the digital camera's file, but when all you have is the end result--the print--enlargements are a different matter altogether. While copyright law prevents any person from copying a professional's work without their permission, it is possible to enlarge your own personal prints using a home scanner and a computer. This simple process for enlarging photographic prints is relatively easy to perform at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the flatbed scanner to the computer and make sure it is functioning properly. This will vary based on your make and model of scanner. You will need software for acquiring the images from the scanner. The software may be included with your scanner or purchased from a third party.

    • 2

Clean the glass of the scanner and make sure it is free from defects, dust, blemishes and fingerprints. This will prevent having to perform editing work later.

    • 3

Lay the print face down on the glass of the scanner, aligned with the scanner edge. Close the top of the scanner slowly so as not to dislodge the aligned print.

    • 4

Open the scanning software and locate the resolution settings. Open the resolution settings and increase the settings to at least 600 PPI (pixels per inch). This will allow you to work with the largest size of print possible without a loss of detail, but it will create a larger file.

    • 5

Scan the image through the software or by pressing the scan button on your scanner. The scanned image will appear on your screen. This image can now be saved and taken to a professional photo printer, or further edited to be printed at home.

If you are printing it on a home printer, open the image in an image editing program, if necessary, and select the image size option. You will be able to resize your image to the desired print size and print to a home printer, or save it for future use.
