How to Create Clip Art From Photos

Clip art designs are ready-made drawings which you can find online for use in your letters, web pages or business advertisements. Also called electronic illustration, clip art is usually divided into categories such as people, animals, buildings, etc. You simply grab the image you want off one of the clip art websites (some free, some not) and insert it into your page. You also can make clip art from your own photographs. It's easy and its a great way to decorate and personalize your emails and online profile sites to "wow" your friends. How about making a clip art portrait of your face to start?

Instructions

    • 1

Tape the 8-by-10 inch photograph of yourself to the drawing board. Tape the sheet of tracing paper on top of it.

    • 2

Draw a line drawing of your face, tracing all the details as clearly and sharply as possible. Use finer lines for the inside details like eyes, lashes and eyebrows. Feel free to "stylize" the portrait by making some parts larger or smaller, such as giving yourself really big eyes.

    • 3

Draw heavier lines for the outer outlines of the face, hair and shoulders. Add texture lines for the fabric of your shirt or blouse or coat. Draw only your face and shoulders. Most clip art is of isolated objects; don't allow a background to distract from your face.

    • 4

Remove the photograph, leaving the tracing paper on the white drawing board.

    • 5

Add color with the colored markers, filling in between the lines. Add silly colors if you want a humorous clip art drawing of yourself.

    • 6

Place the finished colored clip art line drawing face down on your scanner bed with a piece of white paper behind it. Scan the clip art drawing, crop and reduce it in your scanner program and save it to your image files so you can upload it anytime you want to use it.
