How to Fuse a Glass Photo

Fusing photographs in glass will create a keepsake that your family can treasure for years to come. The process is fairly simple and can be used with most any photograph, though black and white photographs work better for this project due to the absence of certain chemicals found in color photos. Ask your local photo processing store to print the photographs in black and white, or desaturate them on your computer using image processing software.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo-fusing paper
  • Photograph
  • 2 pieces of glass the same size
  • Scissors
  • Kiln
  • Fusing glue
  • Pan of water
  • Small paint sponge

Instructions

    • 1

Print your image in gray scale (black and white) onto the glossy side of the photo-fusing paper.

    • 2

Wait several minutes for the ink to dry completely and settle onto the photo-fusing paper.

    • 3

Cut the image out of the paper as closely as possible.

    • 4

Place the photograph into a pan of warm water for about 30 seconds. You should feel the picture beginning to slide away from the white paper.

    • 5

Slide the image face-down onto your piece of glass.

    • 6

Remove any excess water from the image and press out any bubbles that may have appeared. Press gently, and do not leave any fingerprints.

    • 7

Allow the piece to dry for at least 3 hours.

    • 8

Apply a thin layer of fusing glue to the back side of the image using a small paint sponge.

    • 9

Carefully set the second piece of glass on the back of the first piece, covering the photograph.

    • 10

Put the piece in a kiln using the lower full-fuse temperature. (Take your project to a ceramics shop if you don̵7;t own a kiln.)
