How to Set Distance on a Medium Format Camera

Traditional medium format cameras, such as Hasselblad and Rolleiflex cameras, may perplex even an experienced photographer at first. Medium format film is larger in dimension than standard 35mm film, and the cameras that handle this film function differently to a 35mm camera. To focus a medium format camera, the lens must be set to the hyperfocal distance in order for the image to be in focus. This requires the photographer to rely on their judgment of distance and their equipment in order to create a clear, sharp photograph.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance between yourself and the subject. The more accurate this measurement is, the more accurate your focus will be.

    • 2

Set the aperture on your lens. This will determine the range of the optimal hyperfocal distance for your medium format camera.

    • 3

Locate the aperture setting on your hyperfocal distance chart, then look at the chart to determine the ideal distance for the setting. Medium format lenses will have the hyperfocal distance adjustments marked on the lens with a system for aligning the focus until it is perfect.

    • 4

Adjust the position of your camera, if necessary. Certain apertures may only be used at certain distances; being too close or too far will cause the shot to be blurred. Moving towards or away from your subject according to the distance on your hyperfocal distance chart or lens will help you focus.

    • 5

Turn the focusing ring on the lens until the numbers for the appropriate distance and aperture are aligned. You will now be able to take a focused medium format photo.
