How to Make Your Own Camera Backpack for Photography

Camera backpacks are little more than regular backpacks fit with pockets and inserts to help protect and cushion your camera components. Camera backpacks can be quite expensive compared to regular backpacks, so creating your own cushions and compartments can save a lot of money that can be used for additional photography gear. While your homemade camera backpack may not be able to stand up to the rigors a standard camera backpack would be able to endure, it will be fine for most uses.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an inexpensive nylon backpack or use one that you have around. Nylon backpacks can be found cheaply during back-to-school sales.

    • 2

Wrap a sheet of bubble wrap around the diameter of one of your lenses. Cut the bubble wrap so that it fits tightly around the lens but leave a length of about six inches at the end of the wrap to account for the size of lens hoods or filters.

    • 3

Tape the bubble wrap so that it will hold a cylindrical shape.

    • 4

Wrap the cardboard around the bubble wrap so that it matches in diameter and length. Cut the cardboard with your box cutter, and tape it into shape with the packing tape.

    • 5

Put several loops of packing tape on the outside of the bubble wrap cylinder and insert it into the cardboard tube. The tape will help to hold the bubble wrap in place when you insert or remove your lens.

    • 6

Repeat these steps for all of the lenses you own, remembering to leave a length at the end of the bubble wrap and cardboard to allow for lens hoods or filters.

    • 7

Insert your lens into the protective sleeve. You can leave the a lens attached to your camera so that the camera and lens can be quickly accessed from your backpack.
