How to Use Manual Nikon Lens on Nikon DSLR

One of the great advantages to Nikon digital SLR cameras is the ease of compatibility in their lens mount. Nikon has continued to use their bayonet-style F-mount system on their digital camera bodies, ensuring that older lenses are compatible with newer camera bodies. With some simple adjustments, Nikon digital cameras will focus and meter reasonably well with older, manual lenses. Using a manual lens on a Nikon DSLR is simple as long as the lens is an F-mount style lens.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off any automatic focus included on the camera. For many Nikon digital SLR cameras, this control will be a switch located on the camera body near the lens mount. Set this control to "M" for manual.

    • 2

Align the white dot on the side of the camera lens to the white dot on the side of the camera body near the lens mount and insert the lens.

    • 3

Twist the camera lens gently, without forcing, until the lens is locked into place. The lens is now ready for use with a Nikon DSLR.

    • 4

Compose your image and focus by using the manual settings on the lens. With zoom lenses, you may adjust the focal length by turning the lens first, then adjusting the fine focus ring located at the end of the lens.
