How to Take Headshots of Children

Headshot photos are used in the entertainment industry as a part of the job application process. They are submitted to agents and prospective employers to provide a visual representation, which is important when appearances matter. Headshots need to be simple and clean to accentuate the subject's best features. Children's headshots must also take into account age appropriate poses and settings.

  Accentuate the child's features, particularly the eyes. Make sure the lights are highlighted and reflected to add dimension and sparkle to the eyes. Use simple, even lighting and avoid dramatic shadows and angles.

  Instruct your subject to dress in casual, comfortable clothing. Children are easily distracted, and uncomfortable clothing will not help. Clothing should be age appropriate and not contain distracting patterns.

  Avoid adult poses that cause headshots to look unnatural. Using seated, casual poses will add a natural air to the finished image. Also avoid excessive makeup or retouching that detract from a child's natural look.
