How to Print a Photo on a Plate

Photo plates are cute, but they are not for eating. Make a decorative plate by printing a photo on your printer and using a decoupage technique. You will need to pull out your sponge paint brushes and block out a few hours. Gather the kids, too. This is a good project for children eight and older. Younger children will need some help with the decoupage medium or you can do it for them.

Things You'll Need

  • Bottle of decoupage sealer (such as Mod Podge)
  • Sponge applicator brush (2-inch head)
  • Bottle of white craft glue
  • Can of acrylic sealer
  • Photo printed on photo paper (glossy, 8.5 by 11)
  • Pair of scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Print a photograph on photo paper using your computer printer. Printing a photo is just as easy as printing a word processing document. The only difference is that you will need to insert a sheet of 8.5-by-11 glossy photo paper into your printer's input tray instead of standard inkjet or laser printing paper.

    • 2

Cut out the photo using a pair of scissors and glue the photo onto a blank decorative plate using white craft glue. You can use almost any plate. Make sure the photograph is glued well around all corners and lays flat against the plate.

Use a wet paper towel to gently wipe away excess white glue. When the glue dries you will be able to see the residue if you don't wipe it away completely. Set the plate aside and allow it to dry.

    • 3

Apply decoupage sealer on the entire front of the plate using a two-inch sponge brush. Set your project aside and allow it to dry. Coat a second time and allow it to dry.

Lightly spray entire plate with acrylic sealer spray. A glossy finish spray will make the plate shiny. Set it aside and allow to dry. You may notice that your plate has a hard, shiny coating. Your plate will then be ready for display.
