How to Choose the Right DSLR Camera for Shooting Stock Photography

Shooting stock photography can be a fun hobby and a great way to make a little extra pocket money. However, creating marketable stock photography is more than just pointing a camera at a subject and shooting ̵2; it takes preparation, creative vision and most importantly, the right equipment. This means an investment in a high-quality camera, namely a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera.

Instructions

Understand the difference between a DSLR and a regular digital camera. DSLRs have far more features. These include faster shutter speeds, which are essential for capturing sports events and moving subjects; faster processing speeds, which cut down on the delay from when you push the button to when the shutter closes; the ability to take better-quality images (you can customize frame rates and ISO settings) and more flexibility, like the ability to accept different lenses for different applications.

Look at all brands that fit your price range and needs, but know that when it comes to DSLR cameras, anything from Nikon or Canon will be a reliable purchase. These companies have been making quality cameras for years and you really can't go wrong with either one. The major difference between the two is that Canon models tend to accept more third-party lenses than Nikons.

    • 3

Compare megapixel ratings. Most stock photography sites have megapixel requirements for their photos. Any camera with 12 megapixels or better will be fine.

    • 4

Make sure the DSLR can shoot in RAW format. This format is far better than JPG because it doesn't compress the image at all, eliminating some problems like noise and artifacts. Plus the RAW format is easier to manipulate when processing the photos.

Avoid cameras that upsample the resolution. Upsampling requires interpolation and can cause problems with the image quality. Upsampling also violates some of the terms set by stock photography sites.
