Carved Radish Rose--Method 1
Cut off the root end and the stem end of the radish, leaving a more or less round radish. Place the radish, stem end down, on a flat surface and hold it in place with your non-dominant hand.
Slice four petals, spaced symmetrically, along the outside of the radish, cutting from the root end (which is at the top) and stopping just short of the bottom of the radish. Take care to avoid slicing all the way through at the bottom.
Cut two slices, intersecting in the middle at right angles into the center of the radish, dividing the center into four equal squares.
Fill a glass bowl 2/3 full with ice water. Drop the radish roses into the water and leave them there for at least an hour. The radish tissues will absorb the water and expand, which will in turn make the radish rose expand and bloom.
Carved Radish Rose--Method 2
Cut off the root end and the stem end of the radish, leaving a more or less round radish. Place the radish, stem end down, on a flat surface and hold it in place with your non-dominant hand.
Cutting from the root end down toward the stem end, make a slice almost through to the bottom of the radish at the center of the radish.
Cut another slice above this slice and half-way between this slice and the top edge of the radish. Cut one below this slice and half-way between this slice and the bottom edge of the radish.
Rotate the radish 1/4 turn, and repeat the three previous cuts.
Fill the glass bowl 2/3 full with ice water. Drop the radish roses into the water and leave them there for at least an hour. The radish tissues will absorb the water and expand, which will make the radish rose expand and bloom.
Radish Rose Cutter Method
Cut off the root end and the stem end of the radish, leaving a more or less round radish.
Secure the radish to the spike in the saucer-like half of the radish rose cutter.
Squeeze the top of the cutter down onto and into the radish.
Pull the cutter top up and off the radish if it does not pull free after you stop squeezing the two sides together. Remove the radish from the spike.
Fill the glass bowl 2/3 full with ice water. Drop the radish roses into the water and leave them there for at least an hour. The radish tissues will absorb the water and expand, which will make the radish rose expand and bloom.
