How to Photograph a Bullet Casing

Bullet casings, like any other small subject, are best photographed with a macro lens and in a light tent. The fine details of a bullet casing may not be visible in the photograph without a macro lens and may be obscured by shadows or highlights if a light tent is not used to diffuse the light. With a quick setup, any photographer will be able to capture a high-quality image of a bullet casing.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your light tent near an open window or outside to take advantage of natural sunlight.

    • 2

Choose an appropriate backdrop for your bullet casing. Lighter bullets will photograph best on dark backgrounds, while darker bullets will contrast best with light backgrounds. Lay your backdrop at the base of the photo tent.

    • 3

Place flash units around the light tent if sufficient ambient light is not available.

    • 4

Position the bullet casing on the backdrop. In order to capture the greatest amount of detail, you should photograph the casing in multiple positions.

    • 5

Attach your camera to a tripod before taking photographs. A tripod will help steady your shots and allow for a lower shutter speed without camera blur.
