Material
Buy vinyl material by the yard from a local fabric and craft store. Looking online offers more variety.
Choose and use neutral colors, like black and white. Every studio offers basic colors. This is a cost-effective way to build inventory.
Paint the backdrop using acrylics to add more variety. Trace your scene onto the fabric using a projector. Fill in with paint. Fold the fabric a few inches from the top and sew a hem, add a pocket to hang the backdrop.
Spray varnish to preserve the painting on the backdrop. Roll, rather than fold, the finished product so the paint doesn't crack.
Use shower curtains, too, for backdrops. They come in many color, shades and themes. They also come with hems and grommets, allowing for easy hanging as backdrops.
