Tips on Using Nikon D40x

For photography hobbyists looking for an entry-level single lens reflex (SLR) digital camera, Nikon offers the D40X. The D40X offers 10-megapixel picture capabilities, along with a fast start-up sequence and instant shutter response that lessens shutter delay and allows the camera to take up to three photographs per second. According to Nikon, the D40X is also its smallest digital SLR, weighing only 1 lb. This makes it a convenient SLR for the photographer on the go.
  1. Lenses

    • Unlike previous Nikon cameras, the D40X does not use a built-in focus drive motor. This means that the number of Nikon autofocus lenses compatible with the D40X are limited. The D40X cannot autofocus with a Nikon lens unless it has its own drive motor. Lenses with the drive motor built in include the AF-S and AF-I lens series. AF DX and AF Nikkor lenses will not work with the D40X.

    Function Wheel

    • Like many Nikon cameras, the Nikon D40X has a number of preset functions. These may be set by turning the function wheel on the top of the camera just behind the shutter button. Each pre-set function changes the camera's settings to those pre-determined for a particular photography condition. These preset photography conditions correspond to an icon on the function wheel.

    List of Preset Functions

    • The green camera is a fully automatic mode. Other modes include portrait, landscape, night time or back-lit photography, close-up photography, action and children's portrait photography. There are also controls to turn the flash off as well as setting the camera to shoot photos in a completely manual mode and a shutter and aperture priority mode.

    Lighting Sensitivity

    • Compared to the D40, the D40X has a slower synch speed for the flash and less light sensitivity in everyday use. To overcome the lighting sensitivity, you should invest in a Nikon Speedlight, rather than rely on the built-in flash. This can make a significant difference in photo quality for low-lighting conditions and indoor pictures.

    Use of Off-Camera Flash

    • A Speedlight can be used to bounce the flash off low-hanging ceilings by turning the flash directly upward to give a softer, more indirect lighting effect. Additionally, the Speedlight can be set for a through-the-lens (TTL) metering system that self-adjusts to the camera's settings for lighting that is never too bright for the photograph.
