Instructions

Develop a theme. For home décor, come up with a theme that will fit with the rest of your house. Create a collage of family members, special events and vacations to preserve family memories. If your collage is a gift, choose a theme that fits the person you are giving it to.

    • 2

Collect images and photos that fit into your theme. Use your own photos as well images from magazines. Cut out letters to add phrases. Add other mementos such as wedding announcements or ticket stubs to accentuate the theme. Collect more images than you will need because you want to have plenty of source material for playing around with composition. You do not have to use every image.

    • 3

Use scissors or an X-ACTO knife to cut out parts of the photos you want to use in your collage.

    • 4

Assemble the photos on construction paper or another heavy stock paper like poster board. Select a color paper that will serve as an appropriate background. Find an interesting composition by moving the elements around until you like how they are organized. It is helpful to take a photo at this point so you will remember the composition. Glue each piece down. Glue by covering the back of each piece with a thin, even layer of glue. Glue sticks or rubber cement both work great for even coating. Press down each piece with your finger, making sure that the edges are laying flat.

If you do not like the way that the natural textures of the photos and images look, paint a thin layer of Elmer's glue mixed with water on top of the collage. This will also help seal the collage.

    • 6

Frame your collage with a frame that comes with matting. Set the collage under the matting so that the mat board slightly overlaps the collage.
