Materials
Light diffusion panels are best made with PVC. PVC is sold in nearly all hardware and home improvement stores. Depending on how big of a diffusion panel you want, you will probably use two or three lengths of PVC. Decide how big you want your diffusion screen to be and buy the appropriate amount of pipe.
You'll also need two elbow connectors and four T connectors to create each rectangle and stand.
Next, choose your diffusion material. Ripstop nylon is popular, and it's widely available in fabric stores. Or you can experiment with any sheer fabric. Frosted shower curtains also work well and are inexpensive.
Finally, you'll need something to attach the fabric to the frame. Velcro, duct tape, or elastic sewn to the corners of the fabric will work. By using Velcro or elastic, you can change your fabrics to try different colors and textures.
Assembly
You'll be making a big square with the PVC and attaching the diffusion fabric to it.
Start by cutting the PVC to your desired lengths. You should already know the dimensions you want, so cut two long lengths and two short lengths. For the base you will also need two small sections of PVC appropriately 6 to 12 inches long. For the stand, you'll need two longer sections of PVC, 2 to 3 feet long, depending on the size of your finished rectangle.
The base raises the height of your diffusion screen. The stand is made up of two PVC pipes that run perpendicular to your rectangle, one on each end, to keep it from tipping over.
Attach your two elbow connectors to one of the small PVC rectangle lengths. This creates the top of the rectangle. Attach a long PVC length to each of the elbow connectors to create the two sides of the rectangle.
Next, attach a T connector to the bottom of each long PVC pipe. Make sure to keep one of the open hole ends of the T connector facing down on each side of your rectangle. Attach the final short PVC pipe between the two T connectors to complete your rectangle.
You now have a large rectangle with open holes facing down at the bottom. These open holes will form your base and stand.
For the base, cut two small pieces of PVC pipe, 6 inches to 1 foot long. Insert them into the T connector holes at the bottom of your rectangle. You now have a rectangle with two stubs hanging off the bottom.
Finally, create the stand that will allow your diffusion screen to stand on its own. Take the final two T connectors and attach them to each of the PVC pipe stubs. The flat end of the T connectors should run perpendicular to the rectangle.
Slide the remaining pieces of PVC pipe through each T connector to create the stand. When you're finished, you will have a large rectangle with a base and stand. Attach your fabric and enjoy using your new DIY light diffusion screen.
