Beginner Photography Lighting

Lighting is the most essential element in any photo and sets the mood, feeling and character of your photo.
  1. Light Placement

    • The angle of light that you choose can change the look of the photo. The distance between the light and the subject determines how much light appears in the background. For a darker background, keep the light close to the subject. To lighten the background, move the light further from the subject.

    Black and White

    • The lighting in black-and-white photos can be tricky. A subject with very dark and very light features is best. Take pictures in the middle of the day to cast heavier shadows and silhouettes, especially when photographing nature.

    Natural Light

    • The best times to take pictures outdoors is in the morning, in the late afternoon and on an overcast day. Taking pictures mid-day, when the sun is highest in the sky, can cause glares and wash out your subject. Using a flash outdoors is not always necessary, since the sun provides enough light. Adjust your camera setting accordingly.

    Artificial Light

    • A camera flash can cause red-eye. Creating enough artificial light with lights and bouncing the light off an object (such as an umbrella) will create a much softer effect. For a harsher look, simply point the flash directly at the subject. Avoid using yellow-tinted bulbs, since this will be evident in your prints.

    Lens and Filters

    • A great zoom lens is key. Also invest in some filters for your camera for added control. Sometimes they are used to make only subtle changes to images; other times the image would simply not be possible without them.
