Things You'll Need
Instructions
Select your light source. This can be as simple as sunlight or involve studio lighting equipment. A good, strong lamp is also appropriate.
Create a background for the fabric on a flat surface. Light reflects off painted surfaces, so set up a light, neutral colored background made from white paper or foam core board. If your fabric is light colored, you may need a darker background.
Adjust the white balance on the camera to match the light source. White balance alters the color temperature of the photo to compensate for the color cast given off by the light source.
Set the camera to macro mode or attach a macro lens. This will allow a close focus on the details of the fabric. If desired, use a tripod or place the camera on a level, steady surface.
Meter the exposure, if possible. For very light or very dark fabrics, exposure compensation may be necessary. Increase the exposure for dark fabrics and decrease the exposure for light fabrics.
Photograph the fabric. If using a digital camera, load the image onto the computer and open in photo editing software such as GIMP to adjust the color balance for accuracy.
