How to Use a Nikon SB600

The SB-600 flash is manufactured by Nikon for use with Nikon SLR cameras. It can be used with both digital and film cameras. The SB-600 uses through-the-lens flash metering to determine the correct flash output, so the photographer does not have to make calculations for power or burst length. This unit is lightweight, fast cycling and, while it has a less powerful output than the upper range SB-800, is versatile enough for everyday use.

Instructions

    • 1

Install batteries in your SB-600 and press the "on/off" button located below the LCD screen on the back of the unit.

    • 2

Press the flash button located underneath the power button to test the flash. Do not look directly at the flash. The flash should fire a small burst.

    • 3

Slide the hot shoe protector out of the hot shoe mount on the camera body. This is a small piece of plastic inserted in the mount to protect the contacts from damage.

    • 4

Turn off the flash by pressing the "on/off" switch. Rotate the foot lever located at the bottom of the unit to the right, and slide the hot shoe into the hot shoe mount of the camera. Rotate the lever to the left to lock the flash onto the camera body. Turn the camera and the flash unit on.

Press the "Mode" button located on the right side of the main controls to select the camera mode. Available modes will include i-TTL Balanced Fill, standard i-TTL and manual. The first two modes are automatic settings that will determine the correct flash head settings, power and burst length based on the camera settings. Manual mode allows the photographer to set each of these options.
