How to Make a Light Box for Pictures

A light box is an extremely useful way to look at film negatives or slides before you decide to print them or scan them for storage on your computer. While light boxes are available for purchase, making one is a simple and straightforward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a medium-sized plastic box -- perhaps 18 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches deep. You can normally find these for storage or as children's toy boxes in do-it-yourself (DIY) or home improvement stores.

    • 2

In the same store, look for a fluorescent lamp -- ideally one fully enclosed in a bulb holder. Lamps made to illuminate a drive or doorway are perfect, as they are bright and already enclosed. Look for a piece of translucent (or frosted) plastic sheet as well.

    • 3

Place the lamp on the floor of the plastic box. Feed the power cord through a handle and plug it in. Place the plastic sheet on top. Lay your slides out.

    • 4

Once you have sorted your slides, show them to friends via a projector, or better still, scan them into your computer and either print them or create a Web-based slide show.
