Basic Information
It is entirely possible to get an audiobook that is compatible with your Mac computer. However, the only sure way to do this with a Mac is to find an audiobook that is available in MP3 format. The book itself can be downloaded from applications like My Media Mall. After you have downloaded the MP3 file onto your Mac computer, you can transfer it to other Apple devices, such as iPhones or iPads if you so desire.
Procedure
For commercial access to ebooks, the Internet is the first viable location for finding providers. Two you may consider are Library BIN or Overdrive. The latter is often seen in association with local libraries and schools. Select your vendor and view its options. Library BIN, for example, separates available books into categories, such as biographies, new releases, romance and classic literature. When you click on a title, you will see the different format options as they relate to your device --- a Mac in this case. Click on Mac and follow the instructions specific to the vendor.
Library Audiobooks
Investigate your local library to see if it has audiobook options for Mac users. In many cases, this allows you access to library books via audio format through the simple use of your library card. Better yet, you typically don't have to pay anything for the software or the books. Your library offers you the setup procedures to access mechanisms like Overdrive Media Console, granting you access to hundreds of different titles if not more.
Audiobook Availability
As of 2008, "Library Journal" reported that Mac users could acquire some 5,500 of the titles then offered through Overdrive. This amounted to around 25 percent of the total number of titles offered through that provider in 2008. No doubt these figures can only increase. The same source does caution, however, that this technology and its entailing access is only available for models with Mac OS 10.4.9 and newer or more current computers.
