Guru
A wizard can often present himself as a guru or expert in magic in a fairy tale, becoming someone who possesses a great amount of knowledge. Because of this, the wizard is sometimes the person other characters turn to in times of trouble, hoping their problems can be solved through wizardry. One example includes legendary wizard Merlin in the Camelot legend.
Villain
Sometimes the wizard in a fairy tale isn't a friendly character, and he can be the main antagonist for the story's protagonist. When a wizard is the villain in a fairy tale, he often uses dark magic to prevent or hinder the hero of the story from fulfilling a certain goal. Sometimes this dark magic must be fought with some sort of good magic to break a spell. This can be seen in the fairy tale "Rumpelstiltskin."
Mentor
A wizard can be a mentor to the main character of the story, teaching the lead hero certain skills or lessons he needs to complete a quest set before him. Sometimes the main character trains with the wizard for a long period of time before becoming strong enough himself to carry on alone. Merlin also performs this role in the Camelot legend.
Confidante
A confidante in a story is the person who the lead character entrusts his secrets. A wizard can sometimes play confidante when there is a mystery in the story that only the wizard and the hero know about An example of this can be seen between Harry Potter and Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" series.
