How to Increase Your Reading Speed for Free

There are several techniques for increasing your reading speed that you can practice at home for free. Becoming faster and more efficient at reading will allow you to accomplish more in a shorter period of time. Some of these techniques involve training yourself to use different reading strategies and can increase comprehension as well as speed. According to the Speed Reading Center, the average reading speed for adults is around 250 words per minute, and reaching an average speed of between 500 and 800 words per minute is a realistic goal for most people.

Instructions

    • 1

Read blocks of words at a time, instead of reading word by word. Hold the text a little farther away from your eyes than normal, and try to read blocks of several words at one time. Practice to expand the number of words you can read in each block.

    • 2

Learn to stop pronouncing words in your head. This is called sub-vocalization, and it slows down your reading time to around the same speed as talking. Scan the words without thinking about pronunciation, and practice not saying the words in your head as you read.

    • 3

Soften your gaze when you read. This will allow you to take in more than one word at a time and help you to read blocks of words. The goal is for your eyes to move quickly across the page without stopping at each word.

    • 4

Stop re-reading unnecessarily. Many people skip back and re-read words or sentences. This slows your reading time and impairs comprehension. Reduce re-reading by using a pointer, such as a finger or a pen, while you read. Move the pointer under the line as you read. Your eyes will follow the pointer and stop skipping back to re-read.

    • 5

Eliminate distractions while you read. Turning off the TV or radio will help you concentrate on your reading and will increase comprehension.

    • 6

Practice the techniques for increasing your reading speed every day. Begin by using material that is easy to understand. Keep in mind that not every type of material can be read quickly. Materials such as legal documents should be read more slowly, so that you understand every word.
