How to Select a Book to Read Aloud to Children

Reading out loud is an activity which children associate with special times. Whether the reading is at bedtime, story time at school or a public library event, there is something extraordinary about sitting down, settling in, and hearing a tale read aloud. The book is the star in this scenario, so it is important that the material is appropriate. With consideration of a few factors, you can create reading time that is fun and rewarding for everyone.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for large, engaging illustrations when choosing a book for younger children. The spoken words of the story coupled with pictures and drawings can help engage the attention and fascination of youngsters. Older children do not require as much visual stimulation to hold their attention.

    • 2

Read through the book ahead of time to make sure that the material has a flow to it. Books that move quickly work best for reading aloud. Take a few minutes ahead of time to read the proposed book out loud to get a sense of whether or not it has the potential to hold the attention of the child or children you will be reading to.

    • 3

Select material that encourages children to participate. Stories which present the opportunity to ask and answer questions make the child feel like an active participant in story time. Keep in mind that participation may be less desirable for a bedtime story which is intended to soothe and relax rather than stimulate.

    • 4

Choose subject matter that is timely. If a particular holiday is approaching, or if your child is studying a certain topic in school, consider a book incorporating these factors.
