Whether you want to teach the alphabet to a toddler or write algorithms for a computer program there is a book to teach you how. Whatever your motivation, if you want to read a book, you can get through it in four easy steps.

With so many choices, it can be hard to choose a book.

Choose a book. This seems simple enough, but the decision can be overwhelming if you don't have a specific idea of what you want, or are standing in a library or book store filled with thousands of possibilities. Consider your interests or what you hope to accomplish by reading the book. If you have trouble deciding, ask a librarian or clerk for a recommendation, or do an Internet search for suggested reading lists. Book clubs are also good resources.

Read the book cover and jacket flap. This will give you a good idea of what the book is about and what kinds of things the author writes about. Many books also have reviews printed on the cover or dust jacket, which will tell you even more about the book. On hardback books, these are usually on the back of the book and the inside covers. Paperbacks tend to have reviews and a synopsis on the back and a section about the author in the first few pages.

Read the book. If it is a text book or other resource book you should feel free to jump around to the parts that interest you. If you struggle to sit down and stay still for long periods of time, break the book up into pieces -- chapters or a certain number of pages at a time -- and give yourself breaks. Breaking up the book works well when you are reading out loud to children as well.

      Take notes as you read.

Make notes. If you own the book you should feel free to write in the book itself. This markings are known as marginalia. If you do not own the book take notes on a tablet or piece of paper. The notes will help you remember things from the book and find pertinent passages should you return to the book seeking information later.
