Personal Spotlights
Spotlight an individual in each issue of the classroom newspaper. Write a feature that gives readers insight about the individual's life. Feature students who have recently won awards or overcame an obstacle. Discuss their family background, hobbies, goals, recent accomplishments and future educational plans. Don't just limit the personal spotlights to students. Also feature teachers and school administrators. Publish a picture of the individual with the feature story.
Health and Fitness
Create a health and fitness feature that offers tips, advice and exercise routines to students. Offer tips on how to eat healthy throughout the school day. Give students healthy snack alternatives, such as fruits, vegetables and yogurt. If your school has a gym, pool, track and sports fields, encourage students to use them to work out before or after school. Educate students on the consequences of developing bad eating habits. Stress to students that they need adequate sleep, which is at least seven to nine hours, each night to succeed in school. Feature guest editorial pieces from school nurses and off-campus physicians.
Social Media Forum
Newspapers are turning to the Internet to expand coverage and target younger readers. Choose a topic to discuss for each issue, and create a forum around it on a social media website, such as Facebook, Myspace or Twitter, that you have created for the newspaper. Get students to share their opinions on the topic by posting comments on the site. Publish the student's comments in a section of the newspaper.
Discounts and Free Offers
Inform students about discounts and free offers on entertainment. Search discount websites, such as Groupon, Half Off Depot and My Daily Thread, and share the information on the newspaper's website or social media page. Let students know about free offers at restaurants, movie theaters and other businesses. In each issue, offer students entertainment options that are based on their allowances or income from a part-time job.
