Weight and Dimensions
The dimensions of a drop box vary depending on the type of items it will hold. Boxes only meant to hold books are typically 46 inches by 46 inches, or around four feet by four feet. Boxes for books and other items, such as borrowed CDs and DVDs, usually have two parts and run about 76 inches wide and 46 inches tall, allowing for enough space to hold all returned items. The weight of the drop box depends on the material from which it is constructed, but they generally don't weigh more than 50 pounds.
Compostion
The materials used in making a library drop box vary, but are typically metal or rubber. Most drop boxes are made of a metal like stainless steel or aluminum. Stainless steel is more efficient, since it is resistant to elements such as rain and snow. Some models are made of rubber, which is more lightweight than metal and easier to move around.
Unique Features
Unique features can be added to each box, depending on the needs of different libraries. Manufacturers can add separate slots for books, DVDs, videos, CDs and newspapers. Padding can be added to the bottom of the box so items are protected from damage. Manufacturers can add different types of locks to the back of the box, such as a push button lock. These locks provide easier access for more library staff members, since they open without a key.
