How to Tell If a Dune Is First Edition

"Dune" is the name of a wildly-popular science-fiction novel written by Frank Herbert in 1965. The book won the "Nebula" award for Best Novel in 1965, and Herbert himself won the Hugo award in 1966. "Dune" spawned several more novels, including several that were written after Herbert's death by his son and a colleague named Kevin J. Anderson. Several computer games and a movie were also based on the book. The first edition of "Dune" was printed in 1965 by the Chilton publishing house and is relatively simple to recognize.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the dust jacket or spine of the book. If the publisher is not listed as "Chilton", the book is not a first edition.

    • 2

Examine the dust jacket again. If the words "Book of the Month" are located anywhere on the jacket, the book is not a first edition.

    • 3

Open "Dune" to the page immediately before the title page. If the book is a first edition, you will find either the words "First Edition" printed on the reverse of the title page, or you will find a sequence of numbers starting with "1" and ending in "10." If neither of these indicators are present, you are not in possession of a first edition "Dune."
